ARTWORK IN THE ROTUNDA

On March 2, Karen Horne had the opportunity to paint in a live demo in the Utah State Capitol Rotunda. She joined with several other invited artists and musicians in a celebration of Utah’s artistic and cultural sector. Collectively they provided an uplifing force during the hectic last week of the legislative session.

This is the third live demonstration Horne has done at the State Capitol, She had previously been invited to paint live portrait demonstrations there in “Arts Day on the Hill” events in 2014 and 2017.

Horne is fascinated with this magnificent building. She recently completed a large and small oil of the Utah State Capitol and decided to continue this theme in her demo. She worked on a composition showing the State Capitol emerging at the top of State Street. She chose to introduce visitors to her approach to pastel painting, since the medium is less publicly known than oil. Many were fascinated seeing the colorful pigment sticks and method.

She enjoyed meeting with visiting students, legislators, aides, and Lieutenant Governor Henderson. What a lively and positive event in a thrilling space—the people’s house.

Karen has since completed her 16×12 demo from the event, “Cresting State Street” as well as a smaller 12×9 version, “Capitol Reveal” and these pastel paintings are now available. Browse these and other pieces on her Cityscapes SLC page.
